Frank Brennan’s homily

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

St Vincent’s Church Redfern

12 July 2009 – (The Eucharist preceding the launch of Edmund Campion’s Ted Kennedy, Priest of Redfern, David Lovell Publishing, Melbourne, 2009)

Amos 7: 12-15
Mark 6: 7-13

In 1975, I turned 21 and headed down from Queensland to join the Jesuit novitiate here in Sydney. Most nights a fellow novice used offer a prayer for Ted Kennedy. I could not work out why we needed to pray constantly for a US senator – no matter what his Irish Catholic pedigree. … Continue reading

Dear Brothers & Sister,

I have read on the internet about the death of Fr. Ted Kennedy of Redfern. It may surprise you that I am writing from Ireland. I met Ted Kennedy in 1978, at a retreat given by Jean Vanier in Cork. He was with another priest from Sydney whose name I can not remember. I had spoken with Ted during the retreat and gone to confession to him. There were 174 people on the retreat, of these, four were … Continue reading

The Aboriginal people’s priest

On 24 May 2005, I attended the funeral of Father Ted Kennedy, an Australian Catholic priest. Ted has left behind him a legacy of commitment to dispossessed Australian Aboriginal people, and a theology of the poor and the alienated which has not only radically changed what it means to be Church for those who joined him, but continues to inspire the community he left behind.

The funeral was an unforgettable event. It took place in the Aboriginal heart of Sydney, a section of the inner city suburb of Redfern known as ‘the Block’. The Block is a portion of land … Continue reading

Ted Kennedy December 2002

Ted Kennedy’s presence in my life since I first met him at Mass in Redfern in 1979 has been one of great joy and fun with the odd anxious moment caused by his stubborn refusal to surrender to the dictates of modern healthy living….lettuce, greens (Wappo food) and the odd bit of exercise

But it is Teds spiritual `exercise” that has given me the greatest joy and indeed hope and courage in an otherwise alien and misogynistic institutional Catholic Church. Teds presence in Redfern has been a great gift … Continue reading

Reflection on St Vincent’s Church

I have been a member of St Vincent‘s Catholic Church since January 1988. I was drawn by a desire to be part of the healing between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal and participate in the struggle for Aboriginal rights within the context of my faith. I was not disappointed. I was embraced for who I was, encouraged to develop and contribute freely as other members also are.
