W<\/span>herefore art thou, the Catholic Church in Redfern if it ignores the presence of ‘the other’? "Love one another as I have loved you" — the practice of Jesus. If the ‘Catholic Church’ in Redfern ignores the lives of the people in ‘the Block’ in Redfern, then who is it trying to reach? The comfortable? The alms-giver? Can we recognise the faces around us? Who really is ‘the other’?<\/p>\n

Flares command the air,
\nstones rain, revolt reigns:
\none against ‘the other’ –
\nalways ‘the other’
\nseen to live in rat-infested hovels
\nwhich institutions want to hide,
\nthat proverbial ‘gem’ in the gentrifying crown
\nthat can’t be effaced
\nby the ‘black armed band’ gang.<\/em><\/p>\n

‘Assimilation’ does not make
\n‘the other’ disappear;
\n‘Integration’ does not wipe out a culture,
\nso violence is rife, they say,
\nbut what of violence against
\nthe right to say ‘I am’! ‘We are!’
\nNot ‘the other’ creature
\nof some frozen imagining
\nthat wants a new beginning
\nat their price.<\/em> <\/p>\n

The land speaks: look beyond,<\/em>
\nlook within and see outside the city fringes
\n<\/em>where customs flourish,
\n<\/em>the harvest of fish, wildlife,<\/em>
\nand dreams painted on life’s canvas
\n<\/em>unmeasured by ‘another’
\n<\/em>with currency of development and growth,
\n<\/em>yet this culture survives
\n<\/em>seemingly against all odds.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nature speaks
\n<\/em>with language we cannot hear
\n<\/em>but when flares command the air
\n<\/em>and stones rain, and revolt reigns,<\/em>
\nwe pause and think:<\/em><\/p>\n
