{"id":1827,"date":"2005-05-25T10:59:00","date_gmt":"2005-05-25T00:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/church-mouse.lanuera.com\/IV\/?p=1827"},"modified":"2005-05-25T10:59:00","modified_gmt":"2005-05-25T00:59:00","slug":"redfern-community-farewells-activist-priest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/church-mouse.net\/?p=1827","title":{"rendered":"Redfern community farewells activist priest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than 1,000 mourners have turned out to farewell a former Sydney priest renowned for his social justice work for the Aboriginal community in Redfern since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Father Ted Kennedy presided over Saint Vincent&#8217;s Parish for more than 20 years, retiring in 2002 due to ill health.<\/p>\n<p>His funeral combined Catholic ritual with a traditional Indigenous smoking ceremony and Catholic hymns with didgeridoo music.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Green, who gave the Indigenous welcome at the funeral, said Father Kennedy was much loved for his open style of preaching.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He got down with everybody, he spoke to everyone, he ministered to everybody he met,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He didn&#8217;t judge, you know, it&#8217;s so important to have someone like that in your community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a blessing and his passing&#8217;s a pretty tragic thing.
